The Shakespeare Folios William Shakespeare’s writing is his lasting legacy. In 1623, seven years after he died, the first collected edition of his plays was published. This book became known as the First Folio. It was quickly followed by a Second Folio in 1632, then a Third and Fourth Folio in the later 1600s. There are variations between each version.
The First Folio, or to give it its full title Mr
William Shakespeare ‘s Comedies, Histories & Tragedies, contains 36 plays, around half of which were previously unpublished.
It was a great success, but many changes and corrections were made for the second edition. These number about 1,700 in all and include some theatrical entrances and exits.
In addition, the Second Folio contains the first printed work of the poet John Milton, a sonnet entitled An Epitaph on the Admirable Dramaticke Poet W. Shakespeare.
